Statement of Intent
Newstars Futbol Academy (NFA) is committed to creating programming that is culturally inclusive and welcoming. We believe soccer is a powerful tool for integration, connection, and community building across all cultures. Our community shapes who we are as an Academy, and we strive to ensure that every participant feels valued and respected.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and that Newstars Futbol Academy is accessible to all. This policy applies to all members of the Academy and requires adherence to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Ontario’s human rights legislation.

All members are expected to read this policy. It will be posted on the Academy’s website. References to gender in this policy apply equally to all genders.

  • Soccer belongs to everyone who wishes to participate.
  • Newstars Futbol Academy does not discriminate or treat anyone less favourably based on gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, nationality, ethnic origin, colour, religion, or belief.
  • The Academy promotes equality and inclusiveness in all operations and aims to provide balanced access to programs, resources, and opportunities.
  • We are committed to reviewing our policies and procedures regularly, and to implementing all relevant guidance from Ontario Soccer and Canada Soccer.
  • NFA is dedicated to further educating coaches and staff on how to create a diverse and welcoming environment for all.

Defining the Terms
Inclusive Environment
An environment where individuals feel a sense of belonging, are meaningfully included, and are supported in reaching their full potential. It involves respecting diversity and eliminating barriers through intentional policies and program design.

Equity
Providing individuals with the specific support they need to succeed. Equity acknowledges that people face different barriers and may require different resources to access opportunities.

Diversity
The variety of demographic, social, and cultural characteristics within our community, including sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, age, religion, and more. Diversity values and respects individual differences.

Right to Equal Opportunity
Newstars Futbol Academy prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, ethnic origin, class, age, family status, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. Applicants and employees are legally entitled to equal opportunities under the Canadian Human Rights Act and provincial legislation.

Pregnancy Discrimination
Denying an opportunity based on pregnancy or potential pregnancy constitutes sex discrimination and is prohibited.

Religion
NFA recognizes that religious practices may influence participation in sport. Insensitivities to religious needs can discourage participation, so the Academy will make reasonable accommodations, which may include:

  • Adjusting training/play schedules that conflict with religious observances
  • Providing private space for prayer
  • Allowing breaks for religious practices
  • Offering single-gender training sessions
  • Accommodating modest dress requirements
  • Being mindful of dietary restrictions and fasting
  • Ensuring uniforms do not conflict with religious values

To support inclusion of all beliefs, the Academy may:

  • Designate a quiet area for prayer
  • Provide flexible training breaks
  • Offer single-gender training times
  • Support alternative uniform options
  • Provide cooling cloths for fasting athletes

NFA does not tolerate discrimination. Incidents must be reported immediately to Academy leadership verbally and then in writing via email or formal report.

Mental Health
Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being. Good mental health helps individuals cope with stress, work productively, and contribute to their community. Children and youth may exhibit behavioural changes during development, but persistent, intense, or disruptive behaviours may indicate a mental health concern.

Common signs may include:

  • Falling grades
  • Social withdrawal
  • Frequent anger outbursts
  • Sleep/eating changes
  • Risk-taking behaviour
  • Constant worry
  • Mood swings
  • Lack of motivation
  • Substance use
  • Loss of interest

Common conditions include anxiety, ADHD, depression, eating disorders, and others.

NFA encourages early recognition, open communication, and referral to appropriate supports when concerns arise.

Sexual Orientation
Newstars Futbol Academy supports the inclusion of participants of all sexual orientations. Discrimination on this basis is not tolerated and must be reported immediately to Academy leadership in writing.

Women in Sport
NFA is committed to supporting and promoting female coaches and athletes. We prioritize the development of female programs and actively encourage girls and women to participate in all technical and leadership opportunities within the Academy.

Online Training & Development
NFA recommends and supports training resources such as Keeping Girls in Sport, which educates coaches on:

  • Why girls participate in sport
  • How to create safe, supportive environments
  • Injury prevention
  • Keys to keeping girls engaged
  • Coaching strategies

We also recognize the Gender Equity Self-Assessment Tool for organizations to improve equitable access for women and girls.

Athletes With a Disability
Approximately 22% of Canadians live with a disability. Many face barriers to accessing sports due to facility limitations, lack of programming, or insufficient coaching support.

NFA is committed to improving access by:

  • Partnering with local sport organizations
  • Adapting programs where feasible
  • Supporting coach education on inclusive training practices

Online Training – Coaching Athletes with a Disability
This NCCP eLearning module equips coaches to:

  • Promote the benefits of sport
  • Communicate effectively with athletes with disabilities
  • Design safe, inclusive sport experiences
  • Plan continued professional development

The Coaching Kids of All Abilities workshop further supports coaches in creating inclusive environments and managing behaviours positively.
